Definition of "Speculative Fiction"

Speculative Fiction focuses on writing out of the "fiction" or "horror" or "romance" box; the writing requires meditating and pondering various aspects of a given subject or topic; is characterized by heavy conjecture; deals with theoretical as opposed to practical.

It is assumed that no definition of these categories is necessary due to the nature of this web site and the probable readership.

Speculative Fiction eliminates the need for a separation between science fiction, fantasy, and horror because they are different forms of one thing.

As a field of literature, Speculative Fiction is unique. This distinctiveness is best illustrated in the primary question asked by the writers of Speculative Fiction, "What if?"

This has a special capacity to deal with the human equation. Writers of Speculative Fiction, through the creation of unknown worlds or the recreation of events, etc. are able to place men, women and children against powerful circumstances that bring out the best (and the worst) of human characteristics.
